April 21st Sew Day

This month's sew day will be on April 21st from 10 am to 4 pm at the Associate Industries building, 1206 N Lincoln St, Suite 200, Spokane WA 99201.

The Associate Industries building is a new location for us and is situated near Boone and Lincoln.   Hopefully this will be more central to everyone.  There will be a brief guild events and going on update at the beginning of the meeting followed by show and tell.  Join us at anytime from 10 am to 4 pm.  The sew day will also be the last day to sign up and pay for the retreat.

There are still a few spots open if you'd like to join us for a fabulous weekend of sewing, friends and fun!  If you can't make the entire weekend there is a Saturday sew day option including one meal of $60.  Christy McDevitt will be teaching a mini workshop on improv curve piecing Saturday at the retreat which will be the second of our four curve workshops this year.

Here's is a summary of what to expect for the improv curve workshop along with a material list.

Objectives
  • Try your hand at constructing three improve shapes, free of expectations of developing a project (pod, quarter round, rock)
  • Push the envelope--failure is success
  • Find what you enjoy/ what you don’t enjoy
  • Modify shapes to multiply your options
In this short workshop we’ll try three different improv shapes.  We’ll consider some images of curve work and ways to modify these basic shapes to increase your options.

What this workshop isn’t:
not a time to “start a project”
not a time to use your favorite fabric
not a time to worry about how your blocks look

Materials
Consider bringing fabric that’s not your favorite or something you’re ready to de-stash. As I mentioned before you may not want to keep what you make.  As I said earlier you may want to try these techniques free of the expectation that you’ll use today’s work to create a project, so keep that in mind when selecting fabric.

½ to 1 yard of a solid “main” fabric
½ to 1 yard of a solid “secondary” fabric

We’ll work mostly with two colors but you can bring/use more than that.  I advise starting with solids, but if you have a print you don’t like and want to get rid of bring it!  I advise staying away from woven fabric or anything shifty as it can make these techniques difficult.
