May News and Events

May is a full month starting with sew day on May 18th from 10am to 4pm, coincidently the 39th anniversary of the 1980 Mt St Helens eruption.  Our food theme for May is Summer salads.  The guild will provide a hearty salad or two but if members could bring their favs and maybe a grain or desert to go with the salads that would be great!

Since I don't have any quilty photos to share this time I'm gonna stick to photos of Mt St Helens.  Did you know the Mt St Helens landslide is the largest in recorded history?  It was so large that it completely displaced Spirit Lake and filled the Toutle River valley with mud up to 600 feet deep in places.

At sew day we will be passing out 1 fat eighth of Kona Splash and 1 fat quarter of Kona Quicksilver for this years mini quilt challenge!  Each mini quilt must be 20" x 20" and contain both Splash and Quicksilver.  Participants can add 1 other color of their choice that they can use in varying shades, e.g. light blue to dark blue but all the same blue.  Since this year's theme for the guild is improv the mini must be improv sewn.

The ash travelled at an average speed of 60 mph and reached Spokane by 11:35am.  From Yakima to Spokane, Washington state was covered in darkness at noon! Visibility was reduced to 10 feet shutting down cities across the state.

Our first guild Round Robin will be start on Sew Day, bring your "center block" and any fabric that you want included in your quilt. We will have "instruction forms" available at the Sew Day to include your "Dos & Don'ts" for your quilt as the other Round Robin participants add to your starting block. The instruction sheet will travel with your quilt. The schedule will be allow you 2 months to work on adding your touch to each quilt. We plan to have all the quilts exchanged on a Saturday Sew Day. The first "Round" will be completed by the July Sew Day. Questions? Email: jane.bitz@gmail.com and watch our Instagram account over the next week to get more info.

Despite the deviation Mt St Helens began to recover almost instantly.  Many creature in the water had been safely tucked away under a layer of ice, including fish and amphibians and smaller plants and trees had been protected under several feet of snow

Lastly, our Slow Sew night will be May 28th, a date not associated with Mt St Helens but it is the 245th anniversary of the convening of the Continental Congress in Virginia, at the One Tree Cider House from 5:30pm to closing.  Bring yourself and hand sewing projects to work on while sharing the time and a drink with your fellow quilters.  See you there!!
