June News & Events

June Sew Day

I hope everyone had fun at our in-person Sew Day! It was so great to see some faces we'd really been missing for a while. We'll continue the hybrid Zoom/in-person Sew Day model for the foreseeable future, and you're welcome to switch which option you choose as often as you'd like. We'll be including Zoom attendees in the door prize drawings, and if you are attending in person please remember to wear your name tags! It's been a while since we've seen each other, and we also have some new members, and we want everyone to feel welcome.

We will also continue masking/social distancing (unless both parties are comfortable being closer) during in person Sew Days for now, in order to protect the health of our members and their families.

And, thank you to Christa for her presentation, it was a great talk on how to play with blocks that we know and make them into something new!

Events

We've updated the Events page with some exciting new stuff! Notably, the WSQ quilt show is ON! It'll be Friday – Sunday, October 15 – 17, 2021, from 10:00 – 6:00 each day (Sunday 10:00 – 4:00). The theme is Harvesting Quilts. Quilt registration is open and can be done online here until August 8, 2021. WSQ also needs volunteers to help coordinate and put on the show, so if you can help them out please check out their different volunteer opportunities.

Sherri Lynn Wood will be opening up her BravePatch School on June 26 from 8 - 9:30 am PT for a free improv demo & BravePatch open house (register here). About the event, "To kick off this month’s Groove Session, Sherri will demo her freestyle sashing technique with blocks by the Social Justice Sewing Academy. Learn how to create rhythmic, permeable, flexible grids that breathe and connect.".

MQG also announced four challenges: Make-a-Difference Challenge (supporting Trees for the Future), Community Outreach Challenge (our guild will be making a quilt for that, see below for more info), Hexagon Quilting Challenge, and Artisan Cotton Fabric Challenge. Check out the details on all four here.

We've also had some great events shared by members in our guild Instagram group. If you're not in the group and want to be, send us your Instagram handle and we'll get you added! It's also a great place to share projects, ask for advice, or post that funny sewing meme you know we'll all enjoy.

Community Outreach Challenge

The 2022 Community Outreach Challenge has been announced, and the theme this year is angles! If you've been wanting to try your hand at quilt design (or if you're a pro at that already), we'd love you to submit a design to the guild for consideration. Quilts must be 65"x85" and use at least two colors from the provided palette (shown here to the right). If you use EQ8 you can download the challenge fabric swatches here.

We'll be sharing all the submitted designs at the July Sew Day, and members will have the chance to vote on their favorite until July 20. Keep in mind that this quilt will be made by multiple people, so patterns that are either forgiving or paper-pieced will help mitigate any individual variation from block to block.

Quilt Along Project

You can view the chosen pattern (Breeze) and the schedule for the quilt along on our dedicated page here.

June is another piecing month; if you're moving along faster that's fine though! Share your progress or finished quilt on Instagram, we love to see what you're doing.

Sip & Stitch

Sip & Stitches are typically held from 6-8 pm PT. Please note that some events may have different start times due to lectures or guests during the Sip & Stitch. We will update the Events page with any time changes, and will also send those out through the guild email list, Instagram, and Facebook.
